Army Base for Cottesmore

After much speculation about what was to become of the RAF Cottesmore after the Royal Air Force leave the base in 2012 it was today announced that the base would be taken over by the army.

Personally I would rather the base had remained as a active RAF base preserving the history of the site and allowing flying to continue, however that was never going to happen with the Government determined to off selling at a loss one of the most versatile aircraft in service. 

Having a army base at least will provide some employment for local people on the site and bring income into the county, which is better than it closing altogether as many people feared would happen. Will it be as good for the county as the RAF base was, I guess only time will tell. Just let us hope this isn't a political smoke screen and that after more cuts in a few years time the army base is closed down or turned in to some reservist training camp.
