When Tough equals Stupid

Another tough decision was taken by the Government and announced on Christmas Day hoping that we all might not notice while we were having our Christmas Dinners. This time it is the the axing of thirteen million pounds of funding for books for toddlers. I know that we have to make savings but the cuts in Education are short sighted and will not be good for the county in the future. If we cut education we just damaging the prospects of future prosperity. The importance of education in the future of modern technological economy can't be underestimated.

This is typical of this Governments plans to disadvantage the poor in society, especially those families that have no reading tradition and can't normally afford to buy their children books. The money they are taking away goes to a charity called the "The Booktrust" which provides packs of books to parents when their babies are first born, and again at later stages in their development. It is designed to promote reading and develop a love of the written word. Without this love the standards of reading and literacy will fall in the poor that can't afford books making the educational gap between rich and poor wider, but what do they care they have already put students of poorer families off University with the massive tuition fees. So I guess Government thinking is "do they need to read in the first place if they are to become factory fodder?" and the answer they have come up with is no.
