Wildlife Everywhere

One of the lovely things about living in Rutland is the wildlife you come across even on the outskirts of the county Town of Oakham. In the area that is going to developed by the ecoterrorist and their partners in crime Rutland County Council, the Hawksmead development, there is so much going on. The picture below is a little owl on one of the lamp posts near Lands End, a large mail order company.

Just in recent few days traveling down from the ring road and past Lands End and into Oakham, via the Rutland Agricultural Societies Show ground, we have spotted all kinds of wild birds and a few animals too. Here is just list of some of the things we have seen:

• Little Owls
• Green Woodpeckers
• Turtle Doves
• Pheasants 
• Pied Wagtails
• Black Birds
• Robins
• Wood Pigeons
• Magpies
• Crows
• Various Gulls
• Rabbits
• Grey Squirrels

It is sad to think all this wildlife will be made homeless by the wanton destruction of their habitat. Especially when you consider in the case of the Green Woodpecker it numbers are in decline in the UK because of projects just like the one planned for the area.

What we are doing by over development is spoiling the environment for future generations and it is about time people took a stand against the developers. What we need to be doing is developing brown field sites in the county rather than sites that have no development history. Since the closure of Ashwell prison and the planned closure of the RAF base there are potentially enough of these sites in the county to provide affordable housing at reasonable density.

What I still find amazing is that one of the area's being ruined belongs to the Rutland Agricultural Society who run a yearly show to demonstrate what is great about our county. You would have thought that they would have more sense than to sell their land to people who are out to destroy all that they believe in and celebrate every year. It makes them look like a bunch of hypocrites, believing in one thing then doing something else that goes against those beliefs. 

I really don't know what the Rutland County Council are up to. They are elected as guardians and stewards of this rural county and they are set on a course to some of it's destruction.
